#FaceTheWorldIRL: Professional Beauty & Fresh Effects Giveaway // CLOSED

It's that time of year when we unleash new college graduates upon the workforce.  As they proofread their resumes, dust off their briefcase - or tote bag!- and dry clean their interview suits, many will not know that they are going to blow their first impression and even miss a chance at the interview.  I always tell my friends that first impressions matter and it's because they do.  I am thrilled to partner with Olay Fresh Effects, Covergirl, and LinkedIn for their #FaceTheWorldIRL campaign.  The campaign is geared towards helping new college graduates professionally define themselves in the digital world and appeal to a broader group of prospective employers.

After years in the HR field, I can't tell you how many times I saw applicants lose the job before the interview even materialized. Your online persona plays a significant role in your job search. While many employers will never admit to it, I can tell you that you will be googled and anything found on the web will be scrutinized to determine your intelligence, judgement, and good character.  The top result when you google your name, should be your LinkedIn Profile. If you have limited work experience, reach out to any professors that you did research for or those who assigned particularly large projects as well as supervisors or coordinators of any volunteer work you have done and even co-workers at part time jobs or partners in group projects who can attest to your ability to work in a team and pull your weight. Finally, your profile should have a photo.  The #FaceTheWorldIRL campaign recently conducted an experiment which found that profiles with a photo saw a 63% increase in profile views vs. those without a photo.  Olay Fresh Effects and Covergirl have put together this beauty tutorial to help you put your best face forward with a look that is both simple and sophisticated to help you make the best first impression.
Olay Fresh Effects will be giving one ScorchingStyle.com reader a set of my favorite Fresh Effects products that are featured above.  To enter, please leave a comment with your best advice for recent college graduates to best define themselves online. Entries will be open until next Tuesday and one commenter will be selected at random to receive a Fresh Effects set of Everything Off Wipes, Dew Over Hydrating Gel Moisturizer, and Bright On Time Eye Awakening Cream. Giveaway is open to all US residents. Winner must be following this blog on GFC, Twitter or Bloglovin and all entries will be verified.
How do you advise college graduates to Face The World In Real Life?
This post is in collaboration with Olay Fresh Effects, Covergirl, and LinkedIn in support of the #FaceTheWorldIRL campaign. All advice and opinions are entirely my own. I'm grateful for your support of the brands that support this blog.

  1. It's hard to believe that I graduated from college 15 years ago! The advice I have has less to do with landing the interview and job but more to do with what happens afterwards. First it's possible that your first job is not the ideal job. Sometimes you kiss frogs before landing the prince - well, right job. But I suggest making the best of less-than-ideal situations. If it's not the right job for you, find a way to make it bearable until something better comes along. If you absolutely cannot find anything tolerable about your job, I suggest a very fulfilling social life! The point is to not waste time being miserable. Find your happy place no matter where you are...
Next I would say work to live rather than the other way around. Even if you love what you do, jobs come and go. I'm not suggesting you shouldn't love your career. Just be sure that you love yourself more. When it's all said and done, you are left with YOU and the relationships you build with those around you.
My final piece of advice is always speak up for yourself. No one can speak for you like you can! Don't wait for others to notice you, defend you or have your best interest at heart. Be proactive and take care of yourself!
Oh, and one more thing, the 20s go by pretty quickly. At some point you will look back on them. It is my hope that the decisions you make now lead you to look back fondly on your 20s rather than with regrets.
    Good luck!

  2. The best advice I can offer to college grads for best defining themselves online is to remember that in today's changing workforce, they must sell themselves as a potential employee, as well as a freelancer and entrepreneur. Put your leadership skills on display for all to see.

  3. My advice for recent college grads would be to not give up on their goal or dream. It may be difficult to get that dream job right out of college, but if they truly believe in them selves it will happen. You just have to keep pushing through and work hard, it won't happen over night, but when it does the pay off will be awesome!!

  6. I think a professional profile, such as LinkedIn, can be very helpful to recent college grads. I also think that during college years, people hoping to be professionals in the online world should avoid incriminating Facebook statuses or pictures, either personally uploaded or tagged. Once it's online, it's always online.

  7. Best advice for college grads- don't overdo it when it comes to dressing up for the office. Simple is better, and flashy outfits detract from your hard work.

  8. I would recommend an internship to learn the ins and out of the major you are going after. My son is in college and he is doing an intership. He plans on using his experience in his resume and what he learned, what it taught him. Be professional but let them see some of your personality

  12. My best advise for college grads to present themselves online is to stay humble. Just because you graduated doesn't mean you know how things work in the real world yet. Do more listening than talking and remember that once you put something "out there" on the net, it's there for good.
